The Spartan was introduced in 1934 as a direct competitor to the Gibson L4. Both were midrange archtops with a round soundhole. However, the round soundhole did not catch on and both were changed to f-holes in 1936. The last Spartan was made in 1949. The Spartan is the only Epiphone Masterbilt archtop produced with a round soundhole. The 1934 catalog states: catalog 1934
According to Wiedler Epiphone produced from 1934-’49 around 1100 Spartans of which now 101 examples have been registered.
